Album Notes - Keleketla! - Keleketla!
Writing about Kokoko! 364 days ago, I said: What kind of bullshit locution is "world music" anyway? As opposed to what, "cosmos music?" "Intergalactic music?" I've never liked the term, one that Western record companies seemingly applied to any artist not from Europe or North America that made music using words they couldn't understand, or none at all.
Yet somehow, a year later, the music and story of Keleketla! has me thinking about the application of the term, and how apt it is on their self-titled gem. Recorded in South Africa and England while bringing together musicians from multiple continents, this truly is world music not only because of the artists involved, but the resulting smorgasboard of sound and language as well. Other than to say it's wild, it's beautiful, it's melodic, it's rhythmic, and it all adds up to an intoxicating harmonious meld, it's best to not even attempt to describe it. Just listen and enjoy Keleketla!
