Album Notes - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava
Alright folks, it's King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard time. Again. We last heard from them back in April, which, in Gizz time, is more or less light years ago. It's also 2017 part II. During that incredible 12-month stretch, the Aussies dropped five albums. They've promised the same for 2022, with the final three coming in October alone.
As with most of their efforts, a stylistic theme pervades. Here it's their jamband sensibilities. That statement could be taken as a pejorative, and the opening "Mycelium" leans into the happy, boppy trope that could turn otherwise keen listeners off. But the rest of the album is psych, grooving, and stretched out yet tight. How they went about its creation may be the most impressive aspect.
The sextet headed into the studio to write and record with three self-imposed directives: they would create a song based on a title, a major mode, and a BPM. Each of those elements had to be different and the final pieces would be developed through hours of jamming. The result: Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava. It may take a listen or two to fully sink in, but LP number 21 from the Melburnians is thoroughly enjoyable.
Lamented Denim is out October 11, with Changes due on the 28th. Those will no doubt take a different tone from IDPLML but hopefully match in quality. If so, perhaps we'll see these guys here again soon.
