If Makaya McCraven's In These Times was a Surly label, it would probably read: jazzy | rhythmic | hypnotic

The drummer and self-proclaimed "beat scientist" is back, and arguably stronger than ever, on the most recent entry in a line of quality releases over the last half decade plus of his recording career. Prominent harp and cello beckon, but really, with Makaya, you had me at beat scientist.

The opening title track sets the tone for the ensuing 41 minutes, laying the foundation for what may well represent a capstone in the Chicago resident's career. It's also on my shortlist for best albums of the year.
