Album Notes - Okilly Dokilly - Howdilly Twodilly
Alright, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "We finally got some mid-fi new wave surf punk country rockabilly, but where's my Simpson's themed metalcore explicitly devoted to and revolving around Homer's ever-positive, most pious neighbor?" Well my friends, today is your day, as Okilly Dokilly, a five-piece out of Phoenix, take what transpired due to being "stuck in a line at a grocery store" (according to an interview with the lead singer) and turned it into a full-on Ned Flanders live-action experience. As the bespectacled band members don pink collared shirts under green sweaters, Head Ned (backed by Shred Ned, Zed Ned, Dread Ned, and Bed Ned) spits out lyrics of which the majority are direct quotes from the mustachioed evangelical's periodic appearances on the longest-running scripted TV show in American history.
I admit that I first caught wind of these guys days ago after The Simpsons invited the band to appear in the closing credits of a recent Sunday night episode. Still, the music is kind of actually...okilly dokilly. The first couple of tracks portend bigger things before getting slightly bogged down in a rep-diddly-eptitive way. Yet the melodic effort remains throughout, and the closing third features some honest-to-goodness diggable grooves. If you're not into metal-ish music, at least check out the finale which is certifiably very much the opposite of those preceding. Let your mustache down to the Arizona gang as they cram gentle Flanders quotes into 11 scream-diddly-refic ditties.
