Album Notes - Sean Ono Lennon - Asterisms

After a month of jazz to start the year, followed by some classical and bluegrass, I guess we'll keep the theme of "somewhat esoteric" going for one more week with a new psychedelic, jazzy, fusion-y instrumental record from Sean Ono Lennon, yes, the son of John and Yoko. (I'll avoid any other reference to his father other than to say it is confounding to realize that at 48, Sean is now eight years older than John ever was.)

While I've long known of Sean's musical career, I (full disclosure) haven't paid attention to most of it, outside of his surprising pairing with Les Claypool in their Claypool Lennon Delirium that have put out two albums of original material, most notably the excellent South of Reality, making Lennon an unlikely two-timer here in Album Notes. Based on the hit rate of these limited samplings, perhaps I need to fully dive into his catalog.

Asterisms is a brisk 37-minute excursion through a balanced mix of the aforementioned jazz/fusion/psychedelia and the prog (and psych) rock leanings of his efforts with Claypool. It's equally a testament to Lennon's musical ability as a guitarist, his songwriting craft, and vision for assembling an ensemble that sounds as if they've spent a decade playing together. And one, if they continue to collaborate, that would make this album title even more fitting than it currently is.
