Album Notes - The Teskey Brothers - Run Home Slow
Musical macaroni and cheese. The aural embodiment of the oral delight. For me that's what soulful R&B has always been: the ultimate comfort food for the ear.
Some songs console you when you’re down. Others widen that smile when you’re already feeling great. Maybe you’re getting over a break up and there ain't no sunshine when she's gone. Or maybe you’re in love and it's your sunshine on a cloud day. Whether gospel or secular, the sound of Motown or Memphis, there’s something about this intrinsically American gift to the world that can complement any emotion.
And it’s because of the genre’s origins that my mouth dropped when I found out that not only are the Teskey Brothers not from the USA, but in fact the complete opposite side of the planet. The Australians do a damn fine job on Run Home Slow of passing themselves off as the genuine article. As with all good music of this ilk, even if you’ve never heard the songs before, there’s a warmth running through in the familiarity. While it might not blow your mind, it can provide what you need. This right here is my Southern (Hemisphere) Comfort.
