So, I've never been a smoker and know zero about cigars. But some of the Committee members and national officers I've served with on a nonprofit are cigar smokers, and as my leadership term ends in fourteen days, I wanted to get some cigars for their gift bags. Which leads me to why for the first time in my life I walked into a cigar store. I had seen the glowing Yelp reviews for Torpedoes and its proprietor Robert, so it seemed like a natural decision for us to swing by and see what happened. Pretty much the entire store is chockful of wood and glass showcases along every square foot of wall and aisle space. I asked Robert "what's a good cigar for a group gift?" and he kind of chuckled and said that was an impossible question to answer, sort of like "what's a good restaurant?" Individual tastes will dictate what people like, right? My favorite might be Italian, yours might be Vegetarian, his might be Indian, and hers might be Ethiopian! So, after a few back and forths, I went to his best seller case and plucked out eight MI Dominicans for five bucks apiece. He said he's sold a lot of them, so that was the closest I got to a specific recommendation. Robert is a real character, and if you haven't had the pleasure of interacting with him, go do yourself a favor and visit his store. The cigars looked great and sure smelled great as they filled our car with that rich distinctive tobacco aroma. When we got home, I popped them into the gift bags we assembled along with a book of stick matches and a custom engraved cigar cutter. Thanks Robert, we are good to go.
