HYBRID
Mean Green, also known as Martian Mean Green, is a sativa-leaning hybrid bred by the Amsterdam-based breeder DNA Genetics, which crossed a Sharksbreath with a G13 Haze male from Soma, a grower who relocated from the United States to the Netherlands in 1997 to pursue his passion for cannabis cultivation. Considered to be among the most popular strains offered by DNA Genetics, the first generation of Mean Green seeds actually led to three phenotypes. While the first two phenotypes had slothlike flowering cycles that led to an underwhelming final product, the breeders eventually landed on Type C, which unlike previous iterations, featured a much-improved flavor profile and more potent effects. This version of Mean Green went on to win first place for best sativa at the 2005 High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. According to the breeder, Type C of Martian Mean Green has an indica-like growth pattern, but with an open structure common to sativa-dominant strains. A short plant that creates more side branches than usual, this particular Mean Green cultivar produces tight, compact buds during a 63-to-70-day flowering cycle. Reported to procure THC levels that can sometimes exceed 20%, DNA Genetics describes Mean Green as having a “powerful psychedelic effect.” There are a variety of Mean Green seed sellers on the market today, most of which claim to have feminized seeds directly derived from the DNA Genetics cultivar.
